Speed Limits
There is no doubt that speed limits are required and there is no doubt that speed kills. One unwanted truth is that some drivers can stop a car from 50mph faster than someone who’s brain and body are less able at 25mph, yet both will be considered as driving at an unsafe speed if they reach 32mph in a 30mph limit.
Another unwanted truth is the mis-use of speed limits. I am all in favour of 20mph speed limits outside of schools but only when school children are coming and going. If the speed limit is set because of kids then it is wrong to prosecute someone for doing 30mph during the school holidays. Dual speed limits are a good idea for many areas and situations providing they are done in a manner that is understood. I say this because bus lanes have times stuck on signposts when they can only be used by buses or by buses and cars but it never tells you if you can use the lanes inside or outside the posted times or if in fact they are talking about buses or cars. I get myself confused talking about it and it’s a bugger when you are trying to turn left at a junction when there is a bus lane in the way. Talk about driver distractions; give me a mobile any day?
